The United Nations has named a new special envoy to Somalia

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Wednesday he named the former Tanzanian diplomat Augustine Mahiga to head the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Somalia.

The secretary-general appointed Augustine Mahiga to be the special envoy for Somalia. Mahiga has been Tanzania's ambassador to the United Nations since 2003.

The United Nations has been resisting pressure from African countries to deploy a U.N. peacekeeping force to Somalia. An African Union force is in Mogadishu, but has been struggling to defend the Somali government against Islamist insurgents
