A boat carrying Somali immigrants has capsized off the northern coast of Mozambique, killing at least nine people.
Police said Tuesday 33 of the boat's passengers were rescued, but 40 more are still missing.
Spokesman Pedro Cossa said police are working hard to find the missing people.
Mozambique has become a popular transit point for illegal immigrants hoping to reach South Africa, the continent's richest country.
More than a million Somalis have been displaced from their homes in recent years as the country is wracked by civil war. Aid groups say the country's humanitarian situation is among the most dire in the world.
However, most of the displaced go to refugee camps or elsewhere in Somalia and neighboring countries.
The country has not had a stable central government for nearly 20 years.
