UNHCR Unable to Give Enough Protection to Somali IDPs

UNHCR Somalia Country Director Bruno Geddo has admitted that the agency is unable to provide protection to IDPs

UNHCR Somalia Country Director Bruno Geddo has admitted that the agency is unable to provide protection to many Internally Displaced People, in particular to those in Mogadishu suburbs. He said up to 1.4 million people are displacing inside Somalia, 400,000 of them live around the capital.

In an interview with Harun Maruf of the VOA Somali Service Mr Geddo said the continuing insecurity in Mogadishu and the surrounding areas made access difficult and the agency cannot give enough protection to IDPs.

On the other hand, Mr. Geddo disclosed that Kenya has repatriated some eight thousands Somalis across the border since September 2010. He said the forced return should not have happened under international refugee laws. However, h refused to condemn Kenya saying it has a legitimate concern of security.
